Atoka’s annual Veterans Day ceremony is set for Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 8 a.m. at Adkison Park.
The free, all-ages event honors veterans for their service, according to a Town of Atoka listing shared through community calendars that name Parks and Recreation Director Dorothy Isbell as the contact. The ceremony is the town’s yearly Veterans Day gathering at the park.
What to expect
The program includes raising a Medal of Honor flag and a 21-gun salute, according to that same town listing.
Why Adkison Park
Adkison Park sits on Adkison Circle in the heart of Atoka, along state route 206. The town’s parks page says the park is named for Atoka native Sgt. Joseph B. Adkison, a World War I Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
The park is just over an acre and includes a memorial plaza around the central flagpole, with more than 120 bricks dedicated to Atokans past and present, plus a monument to Sgt. Adkison that the town rededicated in 2013. The town lists the Veterans Day ceremony and the Christmas tree lighting as the park’s annual events.
