The Munford Cougars are region champs. Munford beat Memphis Central 41-21 Friday night, Oct. 30, at Crump Stadium in Memphis to win the Region 8-5A title and lock up a No. 1 seed in the Class 5A playoffs.

What happened

Both teams came in at 8-1, so the regular-season finale doubled as the region championship game. Munford led 34-7 at the end of the third quarter. Central outscored Munford 14-7 in the fourth quarter, but the gap was too big to close.

Running back Tay Starks scored three touchdowns for the Cougars, according to the Daily Memphian.

Why it matters

It’s a bit of payback. Last season, Central came to Munford for the regular-season finale, beat the Cougars and took the region crown. This year Munford flipped it.

The win was Munford’s fifth straight and moves the Cougars to 9-1. Over that streak they won 68-0, 63-0, 42-7 and 15-13 before Friday’s title game. Central finished the regular season 8-2.

What’s next

The Class 5A playoffs are up next. Munford’s first-round opponent and kickoff time hadn’t been posted as of Saturday morning. We’ll share them once they’re set.
